The 2015 annual report of the Health Sciences Libraries Group was submitted to the Library Association of Ireland in December 2015, and published in March 2016.

In this issue (2(5)) of HEAR the authors provide useful information (i.e. links to reliable websites, blogs, organisations) for patients, families and carers affected by diabetes. We’ve also included links to recent, high evidence research e.g. current guidelines, systematic reviews and Irish research. Where possible, we provide links to freely available resources.
The purpose of HEAR newsletter is to provide specialised information to health professionals and patients about specific health topics. HEAR is now in its second year and is a result of collaboration between librarians from a variety of Irish health organisations.

1. Open access – Open for action

2. Open Access: Tackling health inequalities

Open Access Week will take place from 24 -30 October 2016. As part of this global event the Institute of Public Health in Ireland (IPH) and Open Knowledge Ireland (OKI) are hosting their Open Access: Tackling health inequalities seminar in Pearse Street Library.
Open Access (OA) is the immediate, freely available, online access to research outputs. These outputs include peer-reviewed journal articles, conference papers and datasets of various types. The restrictions to use, commonly imposed by publisher copyright, patents or other mechanisms of control do not apply.

The International Programme Committee for the joint ICML + EAHIL 2017 conference are organising a 1 hour Twitter chat session where the audience can ask questions of the research mentors.

This is a new look HEAR Bulletin for August 2016. It should be of interest to you and your colleagues as it focuses on Online Medical Resources for all. HEAR stands for Health Evidence Awareness Report and is a collaboration between librarians from a variety of Irish health organisations. This HEAR bulletin is our 10th and we are now in our second year providing both specialised information to health professionals and quality resources to health consumers on specific health topics.
This issue focuses on quality online medical resources, including Irish and international websites, guidelines and standards, blogs and podcasts as well as search tips on how to find reliable health & medical information and how to evaluate what you do find. It’s a useful starting point for anyone new to researching in the health sciences or it can be used as a reference & refresher tool for the more experienced user. Included also are quality resources for patients and non-health professionals on a variety of health topics. Where possible, we include links to freely available resources.

The HSLG Committee, and CPD liaison Anne Madden, have arranged for renowned researcher, author, and information specialist Alison Brettle to facilitate a workshop on research and evaluation for librarians on Wednesday, 24th August 2016, 10am to 4pm.
Alison is Reader in Evidence Based Practice, University of Salford, UK. Her research interests include systematic reviews and systematic review methodology, information literacy, information skills training, the evaluation of library and information services, and effective literature searching.
Participants will work individually and in groups to design and think through the implementation of a study relevant to their work. This workshop aims to provide a user friendly, interactive introduction to research and evaluation in libraries, with a focus on demonstrating our effectiveness, value or impact.
Agenda for the day:
The workshop will take place in the Health Research Board, 67-72 Lower Mount Street, Dublin 2.
The cost is €60 for LAI members, €70 for non-LAI members, and €25 for students/unwaged (which includes light lunch and tea/coffee).

The first meeting of the new HSLG Committee took place in Dr Steevens’ Hospital on 21 June 2016.
We acknowledged, with thanks, the departing Committee members – Caroline Rowan, Diarmuid Stokes, Anne Murphy and Brian Galvin for their great work; and welcomed two new members: Mary and Shauna.

– The next issue of HINT is coming soon.
– The Committee agreed that we would take an in-depth look at continuing professional development for Irish health librarians over the next 12 months. We also hope to provide a very interesting one-day CPD course on 24 August 2016 – watch out for details coming soon!
– Because the International Congress of Medical Libraries (ICML), is taking place in Dublin next year (12-15 June 2017), we won’t be holding a HSLG conference. We will however have a session for HSLG members at ICML. An ‘open forum’ was suggested. ICML website: http://eahil2017.net/
